Fresh on the heels of his successes with café and gelato shop Tommy 2 Scoops, restaurateur Tom Parisi is launching a larger, more ambitious food venture on the outer edge of the Van Vorst Park neighborhood, at the corner of Bright and Monmouth Streets.
Most people with full-time jobs have fantasized about a mid-week kitchen takeover. Greg Gude, owner of 9th and Coles Tavern, was able to live the dream for everyone who can’t afford a personal celebrity chef. On Tuesday, July 26, MasterChef contestant Derrick Prince took over the Downtown Jersey City restaurant’s kitchen.
Even though it is now better known for its trendy nightclubs and high-end clothing boutiques, Manhattan’s Meatpacking District is still home to a handful of meat companies. But there will be one less when one of the largest and most renowned leaves the cobblestone streets of Gansevoort Market for a warehouse in Jersey City.
“As a chef, I’m curious about how other chefs keep their home kitchens,” says Chris Siversen, executive chef at Maritime Parc in Liberty State Park. “The New York Times used to do a refrigerator shot. I’d think: you totally stocked your refrigerator. No way, no how, do you have all that stuff there on a regular basis.”
At the Learning Community Charter School this weekend, about 200 people gathered to celebrate pi — everyone’s favorite mathematical constant — by eating pie and participating in a pie-eating contest, a pie walk and math games.
Hundreds of hungry folks from Jersey City and beyond descended on Parlay Studios in Downtown Jersey City Sunday for 4th Street Arts’ Second Annual Chili Cook-off. But Jersey City eaters can now add another definition to that list, courtesy of Philippines-based Max’s of Manila, which is opening its first East Coast location right on Newark Avenue in the Five Corners area.
“At 12, I liked to think of myself as a connoisseur of beef jerky,” says SlantShack’s founder and president Joshua Kace. “Whenever I went to the supermarket with my parents, they would buy it for me. I knew the good brands from the bad brands.”
