Jimmy King

Jimmy King heads the eponymous Jimmy King Civic Association, is the former executive director of the Parking Authority, the former chairman of the Incinerator Authority, and was also a Hudson County undersheriff.

On July 23, 2009, King was charged with conspiracy to commit extortion under color of official right by the FBI as part of a massive bust of Jersey City officials. The criminal complaint alleges that he accepted two payments of $5,000 each from a purported developer, in exchange for favorable policy decisions if he were to be elected to the City Council. The money allegedly went to his campaign war chest; he was a candidate for the Ward C City Council seat on Lou Manzo’s ticket, but he lost to Nidia Rivera Lopez. He had previously run for the seat in 2005 and lost to Steve Lipski.

On Sept. 24, 2009, he pleaded guilty in federal court to accepting up to $10,000 in bribes from a purported developer in exchange for potential political favors. He faces a maximum of 20 years in prison and a $250,000 fine. You can read the release from the US Attorney’s office here. He will be sentenced Jan. 5, 2010.
