Mariano Vega
Mariano Vega is currently an At-Large councilman. He served as council president from July 2005 to October 2009, and previously served as Ward E Councilman from 1997-2000, and as an At-Large Councilman from 2001-2005.
On July 23, 2009, Vega was charged with conspiracy to commit extortion under color of official right by the FBI. He allegedly received $30,000 in cash from a purported developer in exchange for consideration of projects that developer was pursuing. Most of that money went to his 2009 campaign. Vega is also the director of the Hudson County Department of Parks, Engineering and Planning. He was suspended from that position on July 23, 2009, amidst the criminal allegations. Prior to that, he worked in higher education for 14 years, at UMDNJ and Montclair State University.
