In advance of Thursday’s big opening of Ricky Powell: The Silver Anniversary Show, 58’s founder and owner sits down for a frank chat about the show and the state of affairs at the gallery.
This charismatic quintet just released a new EP, Where We Fall, and are fresh off a U.S. tour. Tree (vocals,guitar) Larry Brinkman (vocals, guitar) and Joe Daly (vocals, guitar) serve up the frontline to a host of songs about drinking and heartbreak, with Chuck Daly (bass) and Patrick Byrne (drums) bearing down for rhythm support. This is one of the must-see — or I should say must-hear — groups in Jersey City.

The challenge for cultural institutions is staying vibrant as the downturn threatens corporate sponsorships and eats away at the disposable income of patrons. Some Jersey City arts organizations are indeed reporting cutbacks because of the recession, but the overall picture remains hazy, with entities finding mixed results or success with fundraising and productions.
Jersey City has tons of musicians and a relatively healthy DIY music scene, but no fully-functioning venue for live music. Why?
