For the last two decades, Jersey City has been undergoing a renaissance of sorts. Development is booming. Financial firms are relocating into our commercial space. New residents are moving in because of our strong transportation infrastructure and short distance to Manhattan.

These are all good things. They are good for Jersey City and good for our residents. But that doesn’t mean the prosperity of one part of our city should mean neglect for others.

That brings me to Greenville.

Goldman Sachs isn’t building towers in Greenville. Manhattanites aren’t relocating to apartments in this part of Jersey City. When you think about the Greenville section of Jersey City, you often think about the crime rate and the poor quality of life. The empty storefronts and damaged sidewalks.

Now I’m not saying all of these problems are the government’s fault. Our community needs to take responsibility and come together to stop the crime and keep kids off the streets. Community policing is a great place to start – but it is a long ways off. We can and must do other things. I know if we come together and attack this quality of life problem on several fronts we can solve it. We can take back Greenville.

With this in mind, I recently organized a group of volunteers and took to the streets – specifically to Van Nostrand Ave.

The reason for this particular block is that there is a park in the middle of it with a pretty recognizable name, Muhammad Ali Park. The only people that remember that the park is named for great boxing legend are the ones who attended the ribbon cutting back in the 1980s. Most people nowadays simply see a rundown park where a concrete slab lies on about two empty lots with a basketball hoop, a chess board and litter throughout. The sign that once read Muhammad Ali Park isn’t even visible anymore.

Now this isn’t to say Muhammad Ali Park hasn’t been the topic of revitalization discussions. Unfortunately, there hasn’t been any action on these plans aside from a new gate being put up. Jersey City’s website – specifically, the page of Ward A Councilman Michael Sottolano – lists this park under a “park renovation” header. He is touting an achievement where nothing has been done. And we can’t blame the economy or cutbacks for the failure to refurbish this park. Grant money has been awarded – grant money that most neighbors are unaware of. These are good people looking for a safe place their kids can play after school. Why isn’t the over $400,000 in grant money being spent?

A chain is only as strong as its weakest link. Until we start investing in Greenville, Jersey City will continue to be weak.

Several politicians and community activists are once again teaming up with the United Way of Hudson County this year to distribute free backpacks filled with school supplies to Jersey City children.

After distributing 8,000 backpacks last year, organizers say they hope to increase the number and distribute more than 15,000 this year. The backpack drive is spearheaded by Jersey City council members David Donnelly and Steven Fulop, Hudson County freeholder Bill O’Dea, and community activists Rolando Lavarro and Andre Richardson.

“I am sure most of you remember the energy and excitement of the first day of school. Everyone arrives with a new backpack, new notebooks, new supplies, new excitement,” Fulop says in an email sent to supporters. “The possibilities for the school year seem endless—and that is how it should be. But we recognize that supplies can be costly. We don’t want parents to struggle on this.”

Families must pre-register to receive a free backpack, which will be distributed at several locations on August 27. All Jersey City school children are eligible, but there is a limit of one backpack per child. A registration form can be found online here.

If you are interested in helping the organizers raise the $100,000 or so needed to purchase the backpacks, you can sponsor a backpack for as little as $7. Click here for more information.

The case underscores one of the biggest frustrations of dealing with NJ Transit: when a passenger makes a complaint, they are never told the name of the driver or the outcome of the complaint.

- Funeral for Slain Minnesota Family: Roughly 400 people including a Minnesota mayor <a href="http://www.nj.com/news/jjournal/jerseycity/index.ssf?/base/news-11/128980593719380.xml&coll=3"target="_blank">attended an emotional memorial service Sunday in a Jersey City church for a Kenyan-born mom and her two children slain by the woman’s husband in their Minnesota home.

- Young Black Political Leaders: The Insider <a href="http://www.nj.com/hudson/voices/index.ssf/2010/11/maybe_this_time_a_new_script_f.html"target="_blank">wonders what the Hudson County Democratic Organization will do about the city’s new crop of promising young black political leaders, like Isaiah Gadsden and Andre Richardson.

- Ferris Evacuated: Students at Ferris High School in Jersey City <a href="http://www.nj.com/news/jjournal/jerseycity/index.ssf?/base/news-11/1289633162318930.xml&coll=3"target="_blank">were evacuated for more than an hour Friday after police received a report of an unattended briefcase behind the school.

Today’s Best Bets:

- Both Global Entrepreneurship Week (GEW) and Make My City kick off today, and there are plenty of events going on. The official GEW <a href="http://www.jerseycityindependent.com/calendar/events/index.php?com=detail&eID=3555&year=2010&month=11"target="_blank">kickoff and resource fair is at 10 am at City Hall, while daytime highlights include a <a href="http://www.jerseycityindependent.com/calendar/events/index.php?com=detail&eID=3556&year=2010&month=11"target="_blank">Women In Business Roundtable (noon) and a panel discussion on <a href="http://www.jerseycityindependent.com/calendar/events/index.php?com=detail&eID=3557&year=2010&month=11"target="_blank">Immigrant Entrepreneurs’ Contribution To Local Economic Development (1 pm). Later on, both weeklong events will come together for a joint <a href="http://www.jerseycityindependent.com/calendar/events/index.php?com=detail&eID=3560&year=2010&month=11"target="_blank">opening night celebration at LITM (7 pm). Elsewhere, author and activist Carolina de Robertis <a href="http://www.jerseycityindependent.com/calendar/events/index.php?com=detail&eID=3094&year=2010&month=11"target="_blank">will be at NJCU as part of the university’s 2010-2011 University Lecture series (4 pm), and Alfonso Daniels’ art exhibition, Memories of Journal Square, <a href="http://www.jerseycityindependent.com/calendar/events/index.php?com=detail&eID=3293&year=2010&month=11"target="_blank">will have its opening reception at Raph’s Plaza (7 pm).

In Statewide News:

- The Middle-Income Homeless: The middle-class homeless are too “wealthy” for government assistance but too poor to make ends meet. This newest population may have one spouse collecting unemployment and one spouse working, but they still can’t make ends meet. The Ledger <a href="http://www.nj.com/news/index.ssf/2010/11/employed_low-income_nj_familie.html"target="_blank">has a piece on the struggles of this new group of New Jerseyans struggling to find assistance.

- NJ’s Energy Needs & Nuclear Power: Industry experts <a href="http://www.app.com/article/20101114/NEWS03/11140350/1007&source=rss"target="_blank">say New Jersey could meet its energy needs without South Jersey nuclear plant Oyster Creek, but losing the reactor would likely mean replacing the power for 600,000 households with carbon sources, a blow to the state’s clean energy goals.

- State Budget: New Jersey is taking in enough revenue to meet its budget projections, <a href="http://www.nj.com/news/index.ssf/2010/11/nj_revenue_is_enough_to_meet_b.html"target="_blank">state treasurer Andrew Sidamon-Eristoff said Friday. In the first four months of the current fiscal year, the state took in 2.6 percent more revenue than forecast. “Collections appear to have stabilized, but they haven’t grown significantly beyond conservative budget forecasts,” the treasurer said.

- Anti-Bullying Laws: Senate and Assembly committees <a href="http://www.northjersey.com/news/state/111510_NJ_lawmakers_want_to_toughen_anti-bullying_law.html"target="_blank">are slated to hold hearings today on toughening the state’s anti-bullying laws.

- League of Municipalities Convention: The biggest question for municipal officials descending on Atlantic City Tuesday <a href="http://www.nj.com/news/index.ssf/2010/11/nj_local_officials_to_attend_l.html"target="_blank">will be figuring out how to run their towns while keeping property tax growth below the 2-percent cap that goes into effect next year.

- International Trips for Those Charged with Corruption: Several of the defendants in last summer’s federal corruption sting <a href="http://www.nj.com/news/index.ssf/2010/11/us_attorneys_office_seeks_to_b.html"target="_blank">have been allowed to travel back and forth to Israeal since their arrests, despite being accused of laundering millions of dollars through networks that reach back to that country. The U.S. Attorney’s office has tried to block the trips, but experts say post-arrest travel is often allowed, as courts recognize that bail conditions shouldn’t interfere with defendants’ livelihood.

- Teacher Pay: Even with overall salary settlements slowing down, more than 140 of New Jersey’s school districts <a href="http://www.njspotlight.com/stories/10/1114/2120/"target="_blank">now start at at least $50,000 for first-year teachers with a B.A., according to the teachers union’s latest list of minimum salaries.

Organizers of the back-to-school book bag and school supply drive say they served “over 5,000″ Jersey City students last weekend, with crowds flocking to the giveaways at three Jersey City sites. And as a thank you to the many people who volunteered with and sponsored the effort, the United Way of Hudson County is hosting a Thank You BBQ on Sunday, September 12.

“What is most amazing about this is how it all came together so quickly. When a month ago, five community leaders came to the [United Way] with an idea of getting 3,000 backpacks into the hands of Jersey City school children by September 1, quite frankly I wondered if we could pull it off,” United Way of Hudson County president Dan Altilio says. “Not only did we pull it off, we increased the amount of backpacks by more than 50 percent.”

Altilio says the event would not have been a success without the numerous corporate and individual sponsors, the community and political leaders that lent their hands to the effort, and the nearly 150 volunteers who donated what he estimates at more than 1,000 hours of their time to time to stuff and distribute book bags, log in pre-registrations and distribute fliers. Citations will be given out to all of the sponsors and volunteers at the September 12 celebration.

But even with the drive’s success, Altilio points out there is much more work to be done.

“There are approximately 20,000 grammar school children in Jersey City, so we were able to help 25 percent of them,” he says. “Maybe next year we can double that number and expand the number of sites. Who knows, in two or three years we might be able to put a backpack with school supplies in the hands of every K-8 student in Jersey City.”

The Thank-You BBQ is scheduled for Sunday, September 12 from 2 to 5 pm, at the Lincoln Park Little League Field.

The drive, which was spearheaded by community activists Rolando Lavarro and Andre Richardson, hosts its final volunteer meeting to discuss final preparations and logistics this evening at 5 pm, at the United Way of Hudson County (<a href="http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&source=s_q&hl=en&geocode=&q=857+Bergen+Avenue,+Jersey+City,+NJ&sll=37.0625,-95.677068&sspn=36.726391,77.255859&ie=UTF8&hq=&hnear=857+Bergen+Ave,+Jersey+City,+Hudson,+New+Jersey+07306&z=16"target="_blank">857 Bergen Ave.).

Organizers have picked up support from a number of elected officials — Hudson County freeholder Bill O’Dea, councilmen David Donnelly and Steve Fulop — as well as from local corporate sponsors, including Liberty Savings Credit Union, Learn It Systems, Catapult Learning, Spectra Energy, Walgreens, Metrovest, Provident Bank, PNC Bank, ISU First Hudson Insurance and the Hudson County Improvement Authority.

“We want to lead by example for our young people. And we want the people of Jersey City to see and experience how rewarding it is to help out and spend time with the youth of our community,” Lavarro and Richardson say in a joint statement. “It is investment and time well spent.”

In addition to volunteers, Lavarro and Richardson say they are still looking for donations. Checks can still be made payable to United Way of Hudson County, with “2010 JC Back to School Program” on the memo line, and sent to United Way of Hudson County, 587 Bergen Ave. Jersey City, NJ 07306.

The giveaway event is slated for Saturday, August 28, from noon to 2 pm, in three locations: Audubon Park (<a href="http://maps.google.com/maps?q=audubon+park+jersey+city&hl=en&cd=1&ei=AclqTJe3EJb8yAWNq727Bw&sig2=sgW74pEy-T-2V3dRQJf6hQ&sll=40.707685,-74.08757&sspn=0.045039,0.021842&ie=UTF8&view=map&cid=15685750912731562253&ved=0CG0QpQY&hq=audubon+park+jersey+city&hnear=&ll=40.708751,-74.08757&spn=0.008149,0.019054&z=16&iwloc=A"target="_blank">Kennedy Boulevard & Audubon Avenue, the Hank Gallo Center (inside <a href="http://maps.google.com/maps?q=lincoln+park+jersey+city&hl=en&cd=2&ei=0MhqTOHXFZD4yATvzrniBw&sig2=iolZm1IhrmWrWkM64gQ_EQ&sll=40.721302,-74.078884&sspn=0.012508,0.011545&ie=UTF8&view=map&cid=15994655043655076486&ved=0CHYQpQY&hq=lincoln+park+jersey+city&hnear=&ll=40.724624,-74.083686&spn=0.008147,0.019054&z=16&iwloc=A"target="_blank">Lincoln Park at the playground near West Side Avenue), and Hudson County School of Technology (<a href="http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&source=s_q&hl=en&geocode=&q=525+Montgomery+St.+jersey+city&sll=37.0625,-95.677068&sspn=36.589577,78.046875&ie=UTF8&hq=&hnear=525+Montgomery+St,+Jersey+City,+Hudson,+New+Jersey+07302&z=16"target="_blank">525 Montgomery St.).

On a Saturday later this month, at least 3,000 Jersey City students will receive free book bags and supplies, if a project spearheaded by two of the city’s young community leaders and political hopefuls get their wish. And with support continuing to come in from other community leaders and corporate sponsors, that goal is looking more attainable by the day, they say, although they are still looking for more support.

The back-to-school project was conceived by Rolando Lavarro and Andre Richardson, who both sought the Ward A City Council seat in 2009. For this project, they quickly received support from Hudson County freeholder Bill O’Dea and councilmen David Donnelly and Steven Fulop. They’ve also received support from Donnelly’s employer, the United Way of Hudson County, which will be matching corporate donations from corporate sponsors like Liberty Savings Credit Union and Learn It Systems, LLC.

“Jersey City youth encounter more than enough obstacles before they get to their classrooms,” Richardson says. “This is just one less burden for kids’ parents — concerns about whether school supplies will make it on working families’ tight budgets during these really hard times.”

Lavarro and Richardson say they are still looking for corporate and individual donations; to find out more, contact O’Dea’s office (201-209-0972), which is spearheading that effort. If you prefer to just cut a check, you can send one payable to United Way of Hudson County, with “2010 JC Back to School Program” on the memo line, to United Way of Hudson County, 587 Bergen Ave. Jersey City, NJ 07306.

“Yes, there are hard issues affecting young people, like gang violence, which we need to focus on, and we will,” says Lavarro. “And there are times like now when a seemingly small gesture like giving away a book bag can also make a significant positive impact to a child or to a parent who is making every dollar they earn to stretch.”

The giveaway event is slated for Saturday, August 28, from noon to 2 pm, in three locations: Audubon Park (<a href="http://maps.google.com/maps?q=audubon+park+jersey+city&hl=en&cd=1&ei=AclqTJe3EJb8yAWNq727Bw&sig2=sgW74pEy-T-2V3dRQJf6hQ&sll=40.707685,-74.08757&sspn=0.045039,0.021842&ie=UTF8&view=map&cid=15685750912731562253&ved=0CG0QpQY&hq=audubon+park+jersey+city&hnear=&ll=40.708751,-74.08757&spn=0.008149,0.019054&z=16&iwloc=A"target="_blank">Kennedy Boulevard & Audubon Avenue, the Hank Gallo Center (inside <a href="http://maps.google.com/maps?q=lincoln+park+jersey+city&hl=en&cd=2&ei=0MhqTOHXFZD4yATvzrniBw&sig2=iolZm1IhrmWrWkM64gQ_EQ&sll=40.721302,-74.078884&sspn=0.012508,0.011545&ie=UTF8&view=map&cid=15994655043655076486&ved=0CHYQpQY&hq=lincoln+park+jersey+city&hnear=&ll=40.724624,-74.083686&spn=0.008147,0.019054&z=16&iwloc=A"target="_blank">Lincoln Park at the playground near West Side Avenue), and Hudson County School of Technology (<a href="http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&source=s_q&hl=en&geocode=&q=525+Montgomery+St.+jersey+city&sll=37.0625,-95.677068&sspn=36.589577,78.046875&ie=UTF8&hq=&hnear=525+Montgomery+St,+Jersey+City,+Hudson,+New+Jersey+07302&z=16"target="_blank">525 Montgomery St.).

At-Large candidate Emilio DeLia and mayoral candidate Dan Levin check a cell phone for the latest election results

The One Jersey City team gathered at the Golden Cicada last night to celebrate both the end of a campaign and what they say is the beginning of a citywide movement. After the polls closed the candidates and volunteers made their way Downtown, spirits high, excited to watch the results come in.

For mayoral candidate Dan Levin, the moment was a special victory for local activists and community organizers. “It’s inspiring,” he said between smiles. “Regardless of the outcome, we built an organization, a movement. We got together and did something really good.”

The candidates and their supporters packed the Grand Street bar, laughing and joking about the last One Jersey City event, a break-dancing session at the Grove Street PATH station. Soon it was standing-room only, as more and more supporters arrived with their families and friends to wish the team one final good luck. Partygoers snacked and reminisced, snapping photos of friends and thanking the candidates for their willingness to challenge the political status-quo.

“Seeing all these people come out for us is really moving,” At-Large candidate Emilio DeLia said. “I don’t care how the polls come out at this point. We fought a good fight and made it to the end.”

As the results trickled in, the unfettered optimism of the candidates became decidedly muted. Clusters of people formed around iPhones, watching as the poll numbers appeared on the county website.

Ultimately, all five One Jersey City candidates fell short yesterday. Levin finished fourth in the mayoral race with 5.6 percent of the vote; in Ward B, Douglas Salters came in fifth, garnering 5.2 percent of the vote; Ward C candidate Norrice Raymaker finished third with 5.3 percent of the vote.

The ticket’s two At-Large candidates, DeLia and Andrew Hubsch, finished eighth and ninth in a field of 13, with 3.2 and 3.1 percent of the vote, respectively.

Many expressed frustration at the lack of voter turnout.

“I am really shocked that so few people came out to vote tonight,” Salters said. “People have been clamoring for real ‘change’ for years now … I’m surprised they didn’t take it.”

A little after 10pm, Levin spoke to the group, expressing pride in all that One Jersey City had accomplished — and reaffirming that the volunteer effort was just beginning. “We knew we were the little guy, but we weren’t doing it for us — we were doing it for everyone,” he said. “One Jersey City is not a political movement; it’s a community.” A few attendees wiped away tears, applauding Levin’s efforts in forming both an alternative political candidacy and in bringing people together people under a banner of reform.

The remarkable thing was that after the poll results had been switched off and the speeches made, hardly anyone had left — and a few minutes after the tears, people were laughing again. Someone even convinced the owner to turn on a bit of karaoke.

When asked what he plans on doing next, Levin said “at this point in time” he plans to run again in 2013, and he also pointed out that One Jersey City will morph into a sort of civic association or similar organization “to facilitate, encourage, mentor and fund political candidates.”

Levin also said his team will actively support Rolando Lavarro, Andre Richardson and LaVern Webb-Washington should they be the candidates in Ward A and F runoffs. (Right now Lavarro and Richardson are neck-in-neck for second place in A, while Webb-Washington barely trails Ron-Calvin Clark in F.)

Ultimately for Levin, losing the election doesn’t constitute failure or the end, but a beginning.

“The campaign was started to get regular people involved in local politics,” he said. “The end result was not the vote, but getting more people involved in the community building process in order to move towards a more accountable and responsive local government.”

Healy signals victory as Hudson County Executive Tom DeGise speaks

Shouts, hugs and handshakes filled Casino in the Park Tuesday night as supporters of Mayor Jerramiah Healy relished their candidate’s victory. With 30,657 votes cast, Healy won — and avoided a runoff — with 52.9 percent of the vote. Absentee and provisional ballots have yet to be tallied.

Supporters began gathering in front of a screen showing live results from Hudson County shortly after the polls closed at 8 pm. Healy’s percentage of the vote never dropped below the crucial 50 percent mark as the crowd steadily grew.

Healy celebrated with by his winning council At-Large running mates, a who’s who of Hudson County officials such as Hudson County Executive Thomas DeGise, and prominent state Democrats including state Democratic Chairman Joe Cryan and Gov. Jon Corzine.

“As America was on the cusp of change, Jerry Healy stood up for Barack Obama, now you stood up for Jerry Healy,” said Corzine, who faces his own bid for reelection this fall.

Unlike Corzine, Healy was an early supporter of Obama during the presidential primary. Obama was featured in a Healy campaign commercial that, among other spots, repeatedly played on big screens inside and outside of Casino in the Park, located in Lincoln Park.

Healy, who is also Hudson County Democratic Organization chairman, thanked supporters including those gathered around the podium.

“Working as a team with all these people, we’ve done a lot for Jersey City,” Healy said. “You look forward to working hard over the next four years to do much more and to truly make this city, as Ronald Reagan used to say, the shining city on the hill.”

As often is the case in municipal elections here, turnout was low, with less than one-quarter of registered voters casting a mayoral ballot.

Lou Manzo’s campaign manager Sean Connolly said he was “astonished” that so many people “stayed home.” Manzo, who finished in a distant second place with 26.3 percent of the vote, blamed “voter apathy” for the low turnout. “People give up because thy don’t think they can beat a machine,” he said.

Manzo appeared disappointed by the loss, but said he was “not deterred.” When asked if he would run for mayor a sixth time, Manzo laughed and said he will definitely keep working with his Office of Public Advocacy.

At third-place finisher Harvey Smith’s Monticello Avenue headquarters, the mood was somber. By 9:30 pm, supporters were already taking down campaign signs and looking for any kind of encouragement from the incoming numbers.

“I’m a little disappointed,” Smith, who received 12.9 percent of the vote, said. “But I wish Jerry (Healy) a lot of luck. I commend them and their campaign”

Smith, whose entire slate was defeated yesterday, said his campaign spoke about “change and things that matter to everyday Jane and John Doe,” of Jersey City, including getting more police on the streets, fixing the local housing problems, and trying to get federal stimulus dollars into the city.

“I want to thank all the people who supported me,” he added. “We did the best we could with the resources we had.”

When asked what was next on his plate, Smith said he needed a much-deserved break. “I want to go fishing,” he said.

At Downtown bar the Golden Cicada, Dan Levin was optimistic, saying his loss in the campaign didn’t constitute failure. “The campaign was started to get regular people involved in local politics,” he said. “The end result was not the vote, but getting more people involved in the community building process in order to move towards a more accountable and responsive local government.”

A little after 10 pm, Levin, who came in fourth with 5.6 percent of the vote, spoke to the group, expressing pride in all that his One Jersey City team had accomplished — and reaffirming that the volunteer effort was just beginning.

“We knew we were the little guy, but we weren’t doing it for us — we were doing it for everyone,” he said. “One Jersey City is not a political movement; it’s a community.” A few attendees wiped away tears, applauding Levin’s efforts in forming both an alternative political candidacy and in bringing together people from disparate parts of the city under a banner of reform.

Ultimately, Levin said the moment was a special victory, even as it was a loss. “It’s inspiring,” he said between smiles. “Regardless of the outcome, we built an organization, a movement. We got together and did something really good.”

Two City Council Seats Up for Grabs

The City Council will be welcoming a few new faces and many familiar ones when it’s new members begin work in July. Last night, Healy candidates and incumbents Phil Kenny (Ward B), Bill Gaughan (Ward D), and Peter Brennan, Willie Flood and Mariano Vega (At-Large) all secured victories. They will be joined on the council by running-mate Nidia Rivera Lopez, who won the Ward C seat vacated by outgoing councilman Steve Lipski.

In Ward A, all four candidates finished with more than 10 percent of the vote, which puts first-term incumbent (and Healy candidate) Michael Sottolano in a tough spot. Despite the fact that he leads the pack with 39.3 percent of the vote, he will face a runoff opponent. What is not yet clear is who that opponent will be.

Currently, Manzo’s candidate Rolando Lavarro is in second place, with 1,260 votes (24.5 percent). However, independent candidate Andre Richardson is only 21 votes behind Lavarro, with provisional and absentee votes yet to be counted. Those ballots should be tallied by the end of the week.

Lavarro said the result in Ward A showed that “we desperately need change in this city,” and expressed his “great pride in [the] hopes” of the Filipino-American community. If elected, Lavarro would be the first Filipino-American to serve on the City Council. However, he was quick to add that he is “running to be the councilman for all people” of Ward A.

Ward F is also a nail-biter for the Healy team, with incumbent Viola Richardson heading towards a runoff.

Richardson seems to have been plagued by a multitude of candidates. While she maintains a commanding lead of more than 1,000 votes, with four other candidates receiving more than 10 percent of the vote, she falls far short — at 39.6 percent — of the 50 percent threshold needed to avoid a runoff. Like Ward A, the runoff opponent here is not yet clear. Only five votes currently separate Manzo candidate Ron-Calvin Clark (656 votes, 15.1 percent) from independent candidate LaVern Webb-Washington (651 votes, 15 percent).

Clark said he “look[s] forward to the runoff” and was hopeful that with the support of the other Ward F candidates, “we can achieve our goal to put a new person in office.”

Healy pledged to work hard for Sottolano and Richardson in the next month. The runoff election will be June 9.

“We think we can bring them home to victory, and put the team back together once and for all,” Healy said.

At Casino in the Park, Healy didn’t mention any of his mayoral opponents but congratulated Steve Fulop, who cruised to victory in Ward E with the night’s most commanding victory, garnering 63.2 percent of the vote.

At Fulop’s campaign headquarters, spirits were high as by 9:15 pm it was obvious that he had been reelected to his post. On Newark Avenue, Fulop supporters could be seen heading from the headquarters to LITM restaurant where the victory party was already underway. Fulop himself walked, with his family, to the headquarters of Guy Catrillo, his closest competitor, to congratulate him on a good campaign.

Shelley Skinner, Fulop’s campaign manager, attributed their victory to an outstanding voter turnout in Ward E. In an election where voter turnouts were, overall, disappointing, voters in Ward E came out in force and helped Fulop to his victory.

Fulop agreed that turnout was the key.

“The fact that we were able to achieve 63 percent in a field where the mayor spent a lot of money and sent out countless mailers, speaks to the residents of Ward E,” he said. “They understand the issues. It’s a very educated bunch down here.”

On his way to the victory party, Fulop greeted supporters and talked of a “stressful and concerning” campaign.

“We try to run a good campaign, a positive campaign,” he said. “We made a decision as a team, that I’m kind of happy about, that we’re not going to engage in anything personal about any of the candidates and it turned out to be a good thing. In hindsight I couldn’t have asked for a better team.”
