LITM and Not Yo Mama’s Affairs are teaming up for a November group show, Rescue Me!, that will raise funds for the animal rescue group See Spot Rescued, and they are currently looking for artist submissions.

Here’s how LITM explains the show:

For a nominal materials cost, each artist will receive a wooden frame/shadow box, fashioned after a shallow shipping crate/hutch. What sort of creature you want to put in your crate is entirely up to you. $10 gets you a frame 12 inches or under. $15 gets you a 16×20 frame. You may either paint directly on the frame’s backing OR fit a canvas/picture into the frame.

For every piece sold, LITM will donate 20 percent of sale to See Spot Rescued, which focuses on saving dogs in the South, specifically in rural North Carolina, South Carolina, and Kentucky. Thirty percent will be divided between Not Yo Mama’s Affairs and LITM, and the remaining 50 percent goes to the artist. If an artist wants to donate all of his or her proceeds to See Spot Rescued, the gallery and Not Yo Mama’s will also donate their portions of the sale money. Last, but not least, a portion of the bar sales on opening night (November 1) will also be donated to the animal group.

To enter, submit jpegs or a website link to andrea (at) litm.com by October 17. There are no limitations on medium, and since most pieces will be created specifically for the show, the curators don’t expect the submissions to be the final piece, but rather they should be examples of your style.

Meanwhile, long lines have many would-be aid seekers getting quite frustrated.

- ‘Untitled Jersey City Project’: During last night’s Emmy Awards, FX premiered the first teaser for a new dramatic series, Untitled Jersey City Project, right now consisting of eight short-form episodes.

- JCFD: Sixty-three new Jersey City firefighters joined the ranks of the JCFD at a standing room only ceremony in New Jersey City University’s Margaret Williams Theatre Friday morning.

- JC Woman Killed in Traffic Accident: A young and popular diner waitress from Jersey City was killed in a traffic accident Saturday morning just after getting off her night shift at the Malibu Diner in Hoboken where she worked.

- Man Found Dead ID’ed: Officials have released the name of a Jersey City man found dead on a Greenville porch Thursday, and the case is listed as suspicious pending the outcome of an autopsy.

- Cop Shoots Dog: A Jersey City police officer shot and killed a pit bull early yesterday morning on Summit Avenue after the dog’s owner released the dog and it charged at the officer.

- JC Man Charged in Bank Robbery: A 26-year-old Jersey City man has been charged with robbing a PNC Bank in Hoboken.

- Police Blotter: A Jersey City woman recently discharged from the Navy was arrested Thursday night after allegedly threatening to kill her two children and her mother; police arrested two Jersey City men Saturday evening with the help of three storekeepers who chased them after the pair robbed their store; a 40-year-old Jersey City woman was pistol-whipped and kicked to the ground during a robbery at Mallory and Williams Avenues while yelling to try to scare away her assailant Saturday evening; and a Kearny man had his pinkie severed during a melee at a school hall early Saturday morning.

- Fires: A woman and a child suffered smoke inhalation after a stove fire at 2248 Kennedy Boulevard on Saturday, while firefighters fought a fire on the first floor of a vacant two-story home at 42 Bartholdi Avenue early Saturday morning.

Today’s Best Bet:

There’s a free screening of the documentary The Imam & The Pastor at St. Peter’s College.

In Statewide News:

- Christie’s Town Halls: A look at the demographics of where Gov. Christie holds town halls as he roams New Jersey shows that while the ZIP codes change, the audience members consistently remain the same. Most are white. Many are senior citizens. And they’re generally watching the governor in towns that are richer, less racially diverse and more friendly to Republicans than the rest of the state.

- Medical Marijuana: Kenneth Cayre was set to become an influential player at one of the state’s new nonprofit medical marijuana centers: a potential landlord, member of the medical advisory board and, through his foundation, a beneficiary. But Cayre was removed from the Compassionate Care Centers of America Foundation, a planned medical marijuana clinic in Central Jersey, last week after the Ledger inquired about his connection to Solomon Dwek, scam artist and the star informant in the massive 2009 sting that led to charges against 46 defendants in New Jersey and New York.

- State Budget: It took two years of scouring through the books, but the state came out $26 million richer Friday after the Christie administration found unused money buried in bank accounts going back to the 1960s. Meanwhile, public workers looking for the cheaper health plans promised after benefit reforms will not have those choices by October’s open enrollments, while their existing “Cadillac” plans threaten double-digit increases in premiums.

- Mobile Farmers Markets: The state Assembly has passed a bill that calls for the state Department of Agriculture to develop a network of mobile farmers markets that will travel to underserved communities and sell fresh produce. The program will include a voucher system that will let low-income residents buy fresh food at a discount.

- Women in the Statehouse: Even though a record number of women are running as Democrats and Republicans for the state legislature this year, their ranks in the Senate and Assembly aren’t likely to change much after election day.

- NJTV: After undergoing heavy criticism during its initial weeks on the air, NJTV, which has replaced New Jersey Network as the state’s public television outlet, is ramping up operations and has hired a veteran anchor for its news show.

- Rutgers: The university will cut the number of freshmen it enrolls for the fall 2012 semester by 4 percent due to overcrowding, meaning that between 200 and 250 applicants who would have gotten into Rutgers will get rejection letters instead.

- End-of-Life Care: New Jersey nursing-home care is less affordable and patients are more likely to suffer bedsores or need trips to the hospital than in many other states, according to a new scorecard on long-term care for the elderly and disabled. Meanwhile, the state has a new advisory council that proponents say will help make end-of-life care decisions easier for residents and their families.

If your pet gets lost, Jersey City’s Animal Control Division says it can help you retrieve it, and quickly, with the newly rolled out “Fido/Feline Alert” system, which relies on other Jersey City pet owners to help find missing pets.

When an owner loses a pet and provides the information or flier to Animal Control, it sends out an email blast to thousands of licensed dog owners who have signed up for electronic, rather than paper, communications from the agency. It also sends the information out to a handful of email lists, like the Jersey City dog and cat owners’ lists, as well as other key contacts like neighborhood associations and local animal hospitals.

So far, Animal Control says it has been able to track down three pets — two dogs and a cat — using this crowdsourcing method since it began in May.

“Anyone who alerts us about a lost, stolen or missing pet can provide us with a flyer and we will email blast this out citywide,” says Harry Melendez, Director of Health and Human Services, Animal Control’s parent agency. “Our database presently has 3,100 active email addresses of our licensed dog owners as well as neighborhood associations and city agencies.” (The combined number of email addresses currently tops 5,000, according to Melendez.)

If you’re a pet owner who would like to be part of the alert list, email animalcontrol (at) jcnj.org with your name, address, and pet information.

- Irene: The storm is still dominating the news. Here’s the latest information that we haven’t already covered:

As the death toll from Hurricane Irene climbed to seven in New Jersey and 40 across the Eastern Seaboard Tuesday, rain-engorged rivers inflicted fresh damage and hardship across the state, washing out highways and chasing thousands more people from threatened homes. Gov. Christie said the Passaic and Ramapo Rivers are New Jersey’s “biggest concern” Monday night as the state continues to deal with the aftermath of the storm. Meanwhile, rail commuters will have it a little easier today, as NJ Transit announced plans to resume most of its commuter rail service for the morning rush (though it is still warning of delays).

Closer to home, the Hudson County prosecutor says the Jersey City woman whose dangerous dogs had been impounded since she violated an order to send them away apparently took the dogs home from Liberty Humane Society as the shelter evacuated before the storm.

And there then there are the politics of the storm. Public-sector shrinker Gov. Christie yesterday “hint[ed] at government layers overlapping ineffectively during storm crisis,” according to Politicker, although he had overall praise for the government’s response. And after touring flood sites in North Jersey, Sen. Frank Lautenberg says he’s going back to D.C. to ask Congress to bulk up the national emergency reserves.

Michelle Nirenberg was planning to help transport the animals being evacuated from Liberty Humane Society today because of the hurricane. In the end, she took four cats home herself.

Nirenberg, who lives Downtown, will foster Han Solo and Pumpernickle for the weekend — and bring another two cats to stay with willing friends who live in the same building.

“I’m concerned for the babies,” said Nirenberg as she tucked the cats’ crates into her trunk with the help of a shelter employee. “We have propane and plenty of groceries, so hopefully we’ll be fine.”

The shelter decided to evacuate its close to 300 animals yesterday amid concerns that the coming storm could seriously damage its building and trailers, said Irene Borngraeber, the director of development. As far as she knows, this is the first time the shelter has done a mass evacuation.

Trucks arrived this morning to help ferry the animals to their temporary homes. As of then, ten dogs were taken to the St. Hubert’s shelter, six to Hounds on the Hudson and nine to K9dergarten, a dog care center in Downtown Jersey City. More than 80 animals were placed in foster homes for the weekend, and Borngraeber said she expected all the animals would be out by tonight. UPDATE, AUGUST 28 at 3:30 PM: The shelter was not able to successfully evacuate all of its animals Saturday night, but Office of Emergency Management and Animal Control officials were monitoring the shelter building in case of a storm surge that would warrant evacuating the animals left in the shelter overnight.

“We’ve really had a lot of people step forward,” she said.

Normally, Liberty Humane Society allows only trained shelter volunteers to foster animals, but some first-timers were given last-minute training that allowed them to help out. The shelter’s biggest concern has been making sure volunteers’ own animals are not at risk, said Borngraeber.

Because the shelter doesn’t have a large emergency transport vehicle with built-in crates, crates and animals needed to be carried from the shelter to waiting cars and trucks one by one.

Angie and Joshua Trojak drove to Jersey City from Bloomfield this morning to pick up three cats and a dog to foster for the weekend.

“We just wanted to help,” Angie Trojak said. “We’re huge animal lovers and we have to get these animals out.”

The couple already have pets of their own, including two greyhounds. Those animals will stay on the main level of the house. The foster cats will stay in the attic, and the foster dog, a pit bull mix named Fiesta, will stay in the basement.

Unless the storm turns extremely serious, in which case, “we’ll all be down there,” Angie Trojak said with a smile. “We’re inland a bit, so I think we’re going to be fine,” said her husband.

Pumpernickle, one of four cats Michelle Nirenberg picked up from the shelter today. She will foster two of the cats this weekend, and recruited friends to care for the other two.

Anyone hoping to take a pet to one of Jersey City’s six emergency shelters is out of luck, as the shelters are not accepting pets, unlike the shelters set up in Hoboken and New York City.

Jersey City spokeswoman Jennifer Morrill tells JCI that the city’s Office of Emergency Management (OEM) has a trailer set up at its headquarters (715 Summit Avenue in the southern part of the Heights) that can accommodate 22 cats and dogs. At 1 pm, she informed us that no pets were there yet, but noted that the trailer is being run on a first-come, first-served basis and will not accept any more pets once it is full.
