Two art openings are on tap: <a href="http://www.jerseycityindependent.com/calendar/events/index.php?com=detail&eID=3794"target="_blank">new work by Orlando Reyes and Keith Van Pelt at 58 Gallery (7 pm) and <a href="http://www.jerseycityindependent.com/calendar/events/index.php?com=detail&eID=3596"target="_blank">The Black & Whites, featuring paintings, prints and T-shirts by Uno, at White Star (9 pm). For beer geeks and the generally thirsty, a <a href="http://www.jerseycityindependent.com/calendar/events/index.php?com=detail&eID=3622&year=2010&month=12"target="_blank">Meet the Brewer Night featuring folks from Dogfish Head is at the Iron Monkey (5 pm to close). In the theater world, NJCU’s Actors Shakespeare Company premieres its new play, <a href="http://www.jerseycityindependent.com/calendar/events/index.php?com=detail&eID=2721&year=2010&month=12"target="_blank">Logomaniacs, tonight (7:30 pm), while J CITY Theater continues its run of <a href="http://www.jerseycityindependent.com/calendar/events/index.php?com=detail&eID=3654&year=2010&month=12"target="_blank">A Tuna Christmas (8 pm). Two pretty different jazz performances are slated for the evening as well, with the <a href="http://www.jerseycityindependent.com/calendar/events/index.php?com=detail&eID=3480&year=2010&month=12"target="_blank">Fall Jazz Bash at NJCU (7 pm) and <a href="http://www.jerseycityindependent.com/calendar/events/index.php?com=detail&eID=2187&year=2010&month=12"target="_blank">the “gypsy-jazz” of Manouche Bag at Madame Claude Cafe (8 pm). Elsewhere, Uptown Crew presents <a href="http://www.jerseycityindependent.com/calendar/events/index.php?com=detail&eID=3806&year=2010&month=12"target="_blank">an Open Mic night at Moore’s (7:30 pm), while the Warehouse hosts <a href="http://www.jerseycityindependent.com/calendar/events/index.php?com=detail&eID=3766&year=2010&month=12"target="_blank">a free screening of Amores Perros (7 pm).

In Statewide News:

- NJEA: Gov. Christie <a href="http://www.nj.com/news/index.ssf/2010/12/nj_gov_christie_criticizes_nje.html"target="_blank">doesn’t think much of the tenure reform proposals made by the state’s largest teachers union.

- Nuclear Power: South Jersey’s Oyster Creek Power Plant, the nation’s oldest nuclear facility, <a href="http://www.nytimes.com/2010/12/09/nyregion/09nuke.html"target="_blank">will be shut down by 2019 — at least 10 years earlier than planned — in a deal with state environmental regulators that will allow it to operate until then without building costly cooling towers.

- ‘Tool Kit’: There is <a href="http://www.nj.com/news/index.ssf/2010/12/second_meeting_with_gov_christ.html"target="_blank">still no deal on between Democrats and Gov. Christie on reforming arbitration for police and firefighters, a key part of the governor’s “tool kit” to help towns curtail property taxes. MORE <a href="http://www.politickernj.com/43368/another-statehouse-summit-no-deal-arbitration"target="_blank">from Politicker.

- ‘Back to Work’ Bills: The Senate Budget and Appropriations Committee Wednesday <a href="http://www.newjerseynewsroom.com/state/senate-panel-approves-7-bill-back-to-work-nj-package-designed-to-make-state-friendlier-for-business"target="_blank">released seven measures that sponsors maintain are designed to attempt to make New Jersey a more competitive state for business by cutting taxes for companies and creating new incentives for businesses to stay and grow. Progressive critics say the legislation is little more than a collection of generous business subsidies and costly corporate tax giveaways.

- The Shore’s Health: Leading environmental groups <a href="http://www.nj.com/news/index.ssf/2010/12/nj_environmental_groups_say_ur.html"target="_blank">are warning in a new report that “urgent action” is needed to address a rising tide of pollution and ecological damage along the Jersey Shore.

- NJN: Despite its uncertain future, the New Jersey Public Broadcasting Authority <a href="http://www.nj.com/news/index.ssf/2010/12/new_jersey_public_broadcasting.html"target="_blank">approved two new long-term lease agreements yesterday, then reiterated its hope that the future operators of New Jersey Network be based in the state.

- Unused Gift Cards: The state <a href="http://www.njbiz.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=84882&Itemid=109"target="_blank">has reportedly filed an intent to appeal an injunction that blocked legislation allowing the collection of funds from unused gift cards.

- Health Care Lawsuit Tossed: A New Jersey judge <a href="http://www.northjersey.com/news/state/120810_NJ_judge_throws_out_suit_challenging_health_law.html"target="_blank">has dismissed a lawsuit from New Jersey Physicians Inc. challenging the new federal health care law.

- PSE&G: The state <a href="http://www.njspotlight.com/stories/10/1208/2043/"target="_blank">is trying to prevent PSE&G from securing special incentives from the federal government, which critics say would boost the utility’s earnings on more than $1.6 billion worth of transmission projects.

- Furloughs: The Public Employment Relations Commission last week ruled in two separate cases that municipalities should have negotiated furlough days with labor unions; Jersey City <a href="http://www.nj.com/news/jjournal/index.ssf?/base/news-5/128885193822890.xml&coll=3"target="_blank">is reviewing the ruling to see how it may impact the city’s furlough plan, which is now in its second year.

- O’Donnell & Christie: As he celebrated his election Tuesday night, Assemblyman Jason O’Donnell said he’d tell Gov. Christie to “go to hell” for waging war on seniors, the disabled, teachers and the middle class. Yesterday, the administration <a href="http://www.nj.com/bayonne/index.ssf/2010/11/gov_christies_office_fires_bac.html"target="_blank">shot back, saying the comments displayed a “lack of interest in bipartisan solutions.” O’Donnell himself backed off the comments yesterday, <a href="http://www.nj.com/bayonne/index.ssf/2010/11/bayonne_assemblyman_backs_off.html"target="_blank">saying “sometimes … you might say things that could have been put a better way. This may be one of those times.”

- Bail Tightened for Murder Suspect: Family members of a man stabbed to death at the Brunswick Estates housing complex last week were outraged by what they viewed as very low bail for a suspect in his murder. Prosecutors <a href="http://www.nj.com/news/jjournal/jerseycity/index.ssf?/base/news-11/128885194622890.xml&coll=3"target="_blank">have since made it harder for the suspect to make bail, switching the bail from $300,000 cash or bond to $300,000 cash-only.

- PATH: The Times <a href="http://www.nytimes.com/2010/11/03/nyregion/03path.html?_r=1"target="_blank">looks at PATH riders who use it as an alternative to the subway inside Manhattan, and calls it “the last truly underground bargain of New York.”

- White Mana: Jersey City’s White Mana <a href="http://www.northjersey.com/food_dining/105656228_What_s_your_beef__Food_channel_judges_iconic_North_Jersey_spots.html"target="_blank">will face off against Hackensack’s White Manna in a slider competition on Food Network’s Food Feuds tonight.

- Ken Bastard at LITM: Dislocations <a href="http://timothyherrick.blogspot.com/2010/11/seeing-essentials.html"target="_blank">has a report from Tuesday night’s opening of The Sacred and the Mundane, the latest show at LITM from artist Ken Bastard.

- Blood Drive for JC Boy: The Ringside Bar and Lounge <a href="http://www.nj.com/hudson/index.ssf/2010/11/blood_drive_scheduled_at_rings.html"target="_blank">will host a blood drive this Saturday for an 8-year-old with the rare disease of Aplastic Anemia.

- Baby Jesus Statues: Two statues of the boy Jesus in the form of the “Divino Nino” <a href="http://www.nj.com/hudson/index.ssf/2010/11/2_statues_of_jesus_as_a_boy_do.html"target="_blank">have been donated to Jersey City’s St. Aloysius Church after a statue of Jesus was stolen from the church this weekend.

Today’s Best Bets:

- Politicos may want to head up to the Loew’s to check out <a href="http://www.jerseycityindependent.com/calendar/events/index.php?com=detail&eID=3455&year=2010&month=11"target="_blank">a roast of Hudson County executive Tom DeGise; the $75 ticket is for a good cause, with proceeds going towards the Foundation for Autism Training Education (6:30 pm). Another Austism-related fundraiser is happening Downtown at O’Connell’s, where a new project for The Soccer Learning Center to develop special soccer classes exclusively for young children with autism <a href="http://www.jerseycityindependent.com/calendar/events/index.php?com=detail&eID=3538&year=2010&month=11"target="_blank">will raise money with a whiskey tasting (7 pm). Elsewhere on the libations scene, representatives from Maryland craft brewer Flying Dog will be at the Iron Monkey for a <a href="http://www.jerseycityindependent.com/calendar/events/index.php?com=detail&eID=3541&year=2010&month=11"target="_blank">Meet the Brewers night (7 pm). <a href="http://www.jerseycityindependent.com/calendar/events/index.php?com=detail&eID=3527&year=2010&month=11"target="_blank">The Art House is back at Art House Productions tonight, featuring poet Heather Lee Rogers and plenty of chances to get on the mic and express yourself (8 pm). Kagero returns to Bar Majestic to <a href="http://www.jerseycityindependent.com/calendar/events/index.php?com=detail&eID=3282&year=2010&month=11"target="_blank">play three sets at a free show (8 pm), and The Warehouse <a href="http://www.jerseycityindependent.com/calendar/events/index.php?com=detail&eID=3156&year=2010&month=11"target="_blank">hosts a free screening of The Diving Bell and the Butterfly (7 pm).

In Statewide News:

- Layoffs: State government is on track to shed at least 1,200 jobs in January, Gov. Christie <a href="http://www.northjersey.com/news/110310_Christie_targets_cutting_1200_state_jobs_in_January.html"target="_blank">said Wednesday.

- Reform Toolkit: The state’s arbitration and civil service systems need to be reformed, both state Senate President Steve Sweeney and Gov. Christie said Wednesday. But the two <a href="http://www.app.com/article/20101104/NEWS03/11030376/1007&source=rss"target="_blank">remain at odds on how, with each accusing the other of gamesmanship.

- Menendez vs. Christie: Sen. Bob Menendez, the next New Jersey Democrat facing a statewide election, <a href="http://www.nj.com/news/index.ssf/2010/11/gov_christie_us_sen_menendez_p.html"target="_blank">will soon focus his attention on New Jersey politics in an attempt to revive his tattered party, according to three people familiar with his plans. The biggest reason for his party’s woes is the tough-talking Gov. Chris Christie; the Ledger says the “expected clash could prove to be New Jersey’s political fight of this young century.”

- NJ in D.C.: The change in leadership of the U.S. House of Representatives means three New Jersey Democrats will lose their leadership posts on panels that shape legislation, but the state <a href="http://www.nj.com/news/index.ssf/2010/11/nj_doesnt_lose_republican_clou.html"target="_blank">is not expected to lose much of its clout in Washington. Meanwhile, some environmentalists worry the Republican takeover of the House might further slow New Jersey’s efforts to develop cleaner energy sources that do not contribute to global climate change.

- Charter Schools: As to the fundamental question of how New Jersey’s 73 charter schools are doing in terms of student achievement, neither the state Department of Education nor the state Board of Education <a href="http://www.njspotlight.com/stories/10/1103/2011/"target="_blank">have any solid answers.

- NJEA Conference: Bucking decades of tradition, New Jersey’s acting education commissioner <a href="http://www.northjersey.com/news/110310_State_education_official_snubs_NJs_largest_teachers_union.html"target="_blank">has declined an invitation to address the state’s largest teachers union at its annual convention in Atlantic City this week.

- Real Estate: Both the commercial and residential real estate markets in New Jersey <a href="http://www.njbiz.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=84408&Itemid=109"target="_blank">are stabilizing or showing signs of improvement, but are far from robust, industry insiders say.

- NJ Colleges Look Overseas: Two dozen New Jersey colleges <a href="http://www.app.com/article/20101103/NEWS03/101103074/1007&source=rss"target="_blank">are joining together to try to recruit more international students with the help of the federal government.

- Federal Biotech $: As part of $1 billion in federal funds announced yesterday for biomedical research across the country in the form of tax credits and grants, 132 companies in New Jersey cumulatively <a href="http://www.njbiz.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=84407&Itemid=109"target="_blank">received more than $52 million.
