Bands Converge on Barrow Mansion to Raise Money for Historic Jersey City & Harsimus Cemetery

By • Aug 3rd, 2011 • Category: Arts, Featured

Consider it a confluence of cool: Downtown Jersey City’s premier promoter putting together a show with five outstanding bands, at the town’s most inviting venue, with food from the city’s hippest bar, all to benefit one of the area’s most deserving causes. Now that’s the way to spend a Sunday afternoon.

Restaurants & Home Chefs Battle for the ‘Best Chili’ Crown at 4th Street Arts’ Chili Cook-off

By • Mar 7th, 2011 • Category: Featured, Food

Hundreds of hungry folks from Jersey City and beyond descended on Parlay Studios in Downtown Jersey City Sunday for 4th Street Arts’ Second Annual Chili Cook-off. Recipes ranged from the meat-packed — one chili used 11 different types of meat — to the vegetarian friendly, with unorthodox ingredients like quinoa and seitan.

Live in JC: Jorge & Aliah and The Micks at Lucky 7 Tavern

By • Aug 12th, 2010 • Category: Arts, Featured

It’s been a while since I’ve been able to get out to Lucky 7 Tavern for a rock event. Luckily that changed Tuesday when The Micks (formerly the McMickle Brothers) and Jorge & Aliah played, and I was invited to emcee the show, introduce the bands and crack a couple of really bad jokes.

Jersey City and the World Cup: Brazil vs. North Korea at Lucky 7′s and Guillo’s Place

By • Jun 17th, 2010 • Category: Arts, Featured, News

If the World Cup is, as those incessant Bono-voiced commercials suggest, outside of the text of serious world politics — some brief respite from global concerns petty or epidemic — it doesn’t mean an end to the speculation of what is actually going on in the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea, at least among the employees at Lucky 7′s. A mostly quiet Tuesday afternoon game between Brazil (the highest ranked team in the world) and DPR Korea (at FIFA-ranked 105, the lowest ranked in the tournament) becomes a forum for foreign policy.

Live in JC: The Press and Plastiq Passion at Lucky 7 Tavern

By • Feb 19th, 2010 • Category: Arts, Featured

This week, Lucky 7 Tavern hosted two newcomers to the weekly Songwriter’s Showcase, with Plastiq Passion and The Press braving the icy conditions to play two very fun, energetic sets. I took my leisurely stroll down to the bar to check them out.

Live in JC: Kagero and the McMickle Brothers at Lucky 7 Tavern

By • Dec 22nd, 2009 • Category: Arts, Featured

When most people think of Tuesday in Jersey City, they don’t think of rock ‘n’ roll. But Lucky 7 Tavern (full disclosure: yes, I work there folks) has become a bit of a rock haven on Tuesdays with its weekly Songwriter Showcase — one of the few places you can still catch up with local music in this fair city.
